Mash Bill is a rock band whose sound is a mash of classic, Southern & British rock with a splash of blues, jazz & funk.
Their name is derived from the friends’ shared appreciation for whiskey. In distilling terms, a mash bill is the unique recipe of grains used to make bourbon. Similarly, each band member lends their musical influences to brew the sonic mash.
Mash Bill’s smooth tones are distilled from tube amplifiers, analog effect pedals & vintage electric pianos. Their music is infused with their many influences including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, the Allman Brothers Band, Jimi Hendrix & Led Zeppelin along with more modern acts like The Black Crowes, Gov’t Mule & the Tedeschi Trucks Band.
Mash Bill traces their origin back to bonds formed at Wake Forest University in North Carolina during the late 1990’s. Informal jams between various bands on campus culminated in a week-long session in the Outer Banks, NC after graduation. These cover songs & original instrumentals were recorded remotely in a vacation home aptly called Glory Days. Several years later, the band converged at a log cabin home in Woodstock, NY for a session known as Music From Big Wood.
In 2013, Mash Bill recorded tracks in Asheville, NC, which was later released as their debut Black Mountain Jam EP. In 2017, the band reconvened in Hoboken, NJ for The City Sessions, which featured “Reason Why,” their first foray into original songs.
While the members regularly swap instruments, the Mash Bill lineup consists of Michael Turner on lead vocals, Chris Vrabel on lead guitar, Joe Luzzo on guitar & vocals, Aaron Baer on guitar, Mike Capizzani on keys, Chris Cetta on bass and Skylar Adler sitting in on drums. They were joined by old friends John Marcelino & John Cooper during The City Sessions.
As the members now reside throughout the US, Mash Bill convenes every four years for a new studio project. While the band is currently on their regular hiatus, Mash Bill plans to reunite in 2021. Until then, their music continues to barrel age…
